The Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) Certification authorizes officers to perform PIT maneuvers during vehicle pursuits in accordance with department pursuit policy. All sworn officers are expected to obtain and maintain this certification.
All sworn officers are required to complete and maintain PIT Certification.
Officers must demonstrate safe and proper PIT techniques during training before being certified.
Certified officers may perform a PIT maneuver only when:
Department pursuit policy authorizes its use.
The minimum PIT timer has been met unless deadly force is otherwise justified.
The suspect vehicle is traveling at or below the department's maximum authorized PIT speed.
Road, traffic, and environmental conditions make the maneuver reasonably safe.
Before attempting a PIT, officers should:
Notify pursuing units over the radio of their intent whenever practical.
Ensure the maneuver can be conducted safely.
Immediately assess the scene after the PIT and transition to the appropriate level of force.
Officers shall not:
Attempt a PIT above the department's authorized speed limit.
Perform a PIT in locations where it would create an unreasonable risk to the public or officers.
Use a PIT in a manner inconsistent with department pursuit policy.
Failure to comply with this policy may result in suspension or revocation of PIT Certification and/or disciplinary action.
