FTO Program:
Always remember anything you say or do in front of a recruit will come across to that recruit as being something we are allowed to be doing. Stay professional at all times when training. If there is a recruit on duty you are to assume the duty of FTO, unless someone else is already training them.
FTOs are held to a higher standard. If you break a rule expect the punishment to be doubly harsh. If an FTO has broken an SOP, they will receive a strike, as well as the possibility of further punishment if the Lead FTO deems it necessary, with High Command approval.
As an FTO, it is your job to make sure the FTO Training Checklist is being completed. There are three phases that an FTO is responsible for making sure the recruit completes.
One FTO is not to be the sole Trainer for one recruit.
First shift for recruits, the FTO should be driving. Do not have the recruit drive until they have a basic understanding of the traffic SOPs.
On a recruit’s second shift, ask them what they have learned so far, and if they have any questions. The first half of the second shift the FTO should be driving, and the recruit calling out over the radio.
Halfway through their second shift the recruit should be driving the car while also calling out radio callouts.
Do not talk down to the recruits. You are their FTO and are there to teach them and help them on the road to success. If there is an issue with a recruit, discontinue training immediately and please bring it up with the Lead FTO, or a member of High Command.
We are here to learn and have fun doing it. Think back to your recruit days and do the things you were grateful your FTO did, as well as things you wish they had done.
Reminder: We are not above the law. Be sure you explain this to all recruits. Never abuse our lights and sirens.
If you have any questions about your expectations or need help in anyway, please reach out to the Lead FTO or any of your superiors.
