NO! Our recruits are not authorized to operate an ambulance independently under any circumstances. Throughout your training, you will work closely with a Field Training Officer (FTO) who will guide you in adhering to our standard protocols and help you transition to solo patrol as efficiently as possible.
- Only exception to this rule is the Pedal Bike. You are welcome to patrol on your own but you can not operate a vehicle without an FTO.
If you feel confident and ready to do so, absolutely!
You are only permitted to a pedal bike but you are more than welcome to patrol the streets while waiting on an FTO.
Handling a "95" (Arrested Individual):
When a suspect is marked as a "95," officers must ensure they are properly searched, cuffed, and secured. Searches should only occur at Lower Pillbox before treatment or at MRPD before uncuffing. The individual should be read their rights, transported safely, and booked according to department procedures. Maintain officer safety, log all evidence, and document charges clearly in the MDT.
During your training phase you are permitted to ride with an FTO that is Air 1 certified. It is encouraged that during this time you ask questions to better understand the requirements that come with operating Air 1 and Moto.
Speak to the team member in charge of the department certification you'd like to receive to find out the rank needed for it!
Handling a Panic Button:
A panic button indicates an officer is down or in immediate danger. All available units must respond immediately and with full force. Treat the scene as high-risk—approach with weapons ready, clear threats, and prioritize officer safety. Once secure, provide aid to the downed officer and detain any suspects.
